Pelvic adhesions (scar tissue) can form as a response to chronic inflammation due to any cause. Pelvic infection, pelvic endometriosis, prior abdominal or pelvic surgery, and a history of intraabdominal bleeding are a few of the possible causes of pelvic inflammation.
When the extent of pelvic adhesions is large, the fallopian tubes can become totally occluded (blocked) and dilated, a fallopian tube can become entrapped behind the uterus or ovary, the bowel can become densely adherent to the posterior wall of the uterus, and/or the entire pelvis can become a complex mass of densely adherent tissues (a frozen pelvis).
