The wedge shaped septum at the top of the uterine cavity (green) represents incomplete resorption of this (poorly vascularized) tissue during fetal development within the mother’s uterus (womb).
The shape of the uterine cavity within the septate and the bicornuate uterus may be identical. Therefore these two completely different conditions cannot be distinguished solely on the basis of a hysterosalpingogram or visual inspection (of the cavity) at the time of hysteroscopy.
Hysteroscopic transection of this tissue (uterine septum) often results in a dramatic improvement in reproductive potential.
