Photograph of the right ovary and adjacent right fallopian tube. The brown discolored regions on the ovary (and surrounding tissues) are classic lesions of endometriosis and can be associated with local signs of chronic irritation (such as the fluid filled blisters or vesicles that are also seen throughout this pelvis). Ovarian endometriosis is generally ablated (removed) aggressively since it has been associated with the development of persistent nonfunctional ovarian cysts (endometriomas), reduced response to ovulation enhancing medications (such as menotropins), and subfertility (possibly through production of embryotoxic substances).
