Photograph of the right adnexa identifying a right ovarian torsion (twisting). The patient complained of chronic right pelvic pain prior to removal of this twisted tissue. Torsion is an uncommon cause of (severe) pelvic pain and if the blood supply to the twisted tissue has been destroyed then the involved (possibly necrotic) tissue usually should be removed. Devascularization (interruption of the blood supply) of the ovary will result in the inability to ovulate from the affected ovary (via destruction of eggs on that side).
